Trade fair city Hannover

If you can spare some time between your business obligations, you should definitely plan a visit to the Old Town of Hanover. This can be reached in 20 minutes by car.

In der Nachkriegszeit war die niedersächsische Landeshauptstadt Jahr für Jahr das Schaufenster des deutschen Wirtschaftswunders. Heute sind Cebit und Hannover-Messe die größten Wirtschaftstreffs der Welt.

Which trade fair in Germany has a web address like www.messe.de and which can call itself German Trade Fair, although it does not cover Germany? It is the Trade Fair Association Hannover. Often mocked as boring, Hannover is at it’s best with the world’s largest Trad Fairs Cebit and Hannover Trade Fair and reflects the globalization of economy like no other city – neither inland nor abroad.

For sure Hannover would be still a provincial town, like was before World War II. Here cosmopolitical flair was only known from visits in Hamburg. But after the war the British occupation forces opened up the gateway to the world. In 1947 the first “Export Trade Fair Hannover” was opened. Thereby Hannover succeed the venerable trade fair city Leipzig.

For the world fair Expo2000 in Hannover the trade fair invested more than 750 million Euro into infrastructure and new fairground halls. Today the Trade fair Hannover has more than 27 modern fairground halls with an expanse of circa 495 300 square meters, a huge open-air area, ICE connections every hour, city railway connections at minute intervals. The Messeschnellweg is expanded to six lanes.

Trade fair city Hannover

In the post-war years the provincial capital of Lower Saxony was year after year the display window of the german economic miracle. Today Cebit and Hannover Trade Fair are the biggest economical meetings worldwide.

But after the war the British occupation forces opened up the gateway to the world. In 1947 the first “Export Trade Fair Hannover” was opened. Thereby Hannover succeed the venerable trade fair city Leipzig.

The first so called „Fischbrötchen“-Trade Fair counted already 736 000 visitors from 52 nations after 21 days. This was not only the starting signal for the German economic miracle, but also the rising of Hannover as a world-famous trade fair city. At the Hannover Trade Fair, the biggest industrial exhibition of the world, top politicans from West and East Germany met, here stopped and still stop the top managers of the German economy.

In 1985 the universal industrial exhibition in Hannover was bursting at the seams: more than 800 000 visitors came to the fair. City and Trade fair could no longer cope with this stream of visitors. Therefore the exhibition was splitted. Since then the Hannover Trade Fair is known as origin of many trade fairs. In 1986 the first Cebit took place, today the worldwide largest trade fair for information and communication technology.

In the record-breaking year 2005 the trade fair Hannover staged 52 exhibitions inland and 46 exhibitions abroad. In Hannover 28 000 exhibitors and more than 2 million visitors were counted. Today the range of trade fairs expands from the world’s leading trade fairs Cebit and Hannnover Trade Fair, over Ligna (world’s fair for forest and wood management), EMO (world of metalworking), Domotex (wolrd largest carpet fair) to the IAA commercial vehicle and Didacta (world largest fair for education).

The citizens of Hannover adapted themselves to the trade fair: to the Cebit there is a curfew, because everywhere is full – restaurants, pubs and discotheques. Nevertheless the Hanoverian love their tade fairs. They enjoy the internationality and are good hosts, especially as room landlords when all hotels are fully booked.
